What Shouldn’t You Take On A Hiking Trip

Hiking is a fun activity which helps you stay healthy while curing your wanderlust. Birds chirping, the wind in your hair and the kind of silence we city slickers never experience, what’s not to like. It’s no wonder so many people take to hiking to get into shape and for a brief respite from city life.

One of the most important things while planning a hike is knowing what to pack for it. You definitely do not want to miss out on the essentials and realize it halfway down the trail. On the other hand, packing too many things will slow you down and also tire you out. So, below is a list of items you should avoid when heading for a hike.

  1. Pillows

Carrying pillows is a rookie mistake beginners make. They take up a lot of space, even the small travel-sized ones and are unnecessary on a hiking trip. You could use a rolled up jacket, extra clothes or even your backpack as a substitute.

  1. Bulky photography equipment

Unless you are a professional photographer, getting paid for the pictures you take or going on the hike with the purpose of taking pictures, it is best to leave the big cameras, zoom lens and tripods at home. They are big and heavy and will hinder your progress. Also, being expensive equipment, you would constantly be worrying about them. Instead you could go with a small digital camera or just stick with your phone’s camera.

  1. Huge hiking boots

Most hikers make the mistake of using hiking boots with ankle support on longer trips. Ankle support is completely unnecessary to start with, our ankles are designed to walk long distances. The ankle support the boots provide will just end up weakening your ankles. A pair of good, sturdy running shoes would provide the same comfort level as the hiking boots. So, trade in your hiking boots for simple running shoes.

  1. Too many clothes

Pack ONLY those clothes which you absolutely need. This is one mistake made by all travelers not just those going on hikes. We convince ourselves that we need extra clothes “just in case” and end up packing way more than we need. It is best to pack light while going for a hike and the best way to keep your bag light is to toss out all the extra clothes.

  1. Large first aid kit

While it is absolutely necessary to carry a first aid kit on a hike, make sure it doesn’t contain enough to supplies to stock a whole pharmacy. . Make sure to pack a first aid kit keeping in mind the length of your trip and the number of people. Avoid those first aid items which you do not know how to use. Include essentials like duct tape, bandages, gauze, alcohol wipes, antibiotic cream and painkillers. With these basic items, you should be good to go.

Now that you know what not to pack for your next hiking trip, it is time to venture into the great outdoors and start hiking!

Stop Planning, Start Travelling – Why are we making excuses?

Traveling is one of the joys of life. It opens you up to new cultures, experiences, people and lifestyles. It helps you broaden your mind and widen your horizons. There are very few things which can compare with the thrill of packing up your bags and heading off on an adventure, into the unknown.

So, why do we always find reasons to put off this amazing experience? While all of us make plans to go backpacking or take a long trip to some foreign destination, it rarely happens. It may seem daunting to just drop everything and travel to a strange, new place, but that is the best part of travel, you never know what is in store for you. It is about time we shed away the excuses and get out there.

One of the most common excuses people make is that they do not have the bucks. Well, not all travelers are millionaires. It is possible and even better, in some ways, to travel on a budget. Opting for smaller, less expensive hotels or even couch surfing, will give you a much better idea of the local culture than a stay at a five-star resort. Try using public transport whenever possible or walking. By saving some money before travel and minimizing cost while traveling will be enough to get you through.

Another excuse most people come up with is the fear of not having a job to go back to. If you plan on traveling for a longer period of time, you might have to quit your job. Getting back on the job scene after your travels is not too easy. However, some employers do appreciate the importance of travel and how it changes a person for the better. Also, you will notice changes within yourself which you otherwise would never have experienced. You might also pick up a few skills which could turn out to be helpful.

Not wanting to travel alone is another excuse most of us give for not pursuing our travel goals. While the unknown factor in travel can be unnerving, it is just part of the charm. It may seem scary and dangerous, venturing into a foreign country all by yourself. However, as testified by many solo travelers, you learn the most when you travel alone. Just make sure you do your research and stay alert while on the move. Who knows, maybe you could meet someone to travel with on one of your solo journeys.

Not knowing the local language is another scary part of travel. Though most people, nowadays, would be able to speak or understand a little English, it is not a problem even if they do not. Studying up on a few basic phrases in the local language would definitely be a big advantage. You could also use gestures and actions to convey your message. When the time comes you will be able to find a way to communicate.

There are many more excuses I could come up with for not traveling and putting it off for another time, but these excuses will always hinder your way. If you really do want to travel, now is the time to take the leap. Pack your bags, book your tickets and start your adventure!

7 Reasons Why Foodies Love Pressure Cookers

Pressure cookers have become one of the most loved appliances in the kitchen. While older versions of the pressure cooker were thought to be dangerous to use, this is largely based on myth. However if you are apprehensive about using the older type of pressure cookers, an electric pressure cooker may be the way to go for you. Whichever type you opt for, it will be a great boon to you. Foodies around the world have been discovering the many uses and benefits of the pressure cooker and it has become a very popular appliance.

Listed below are a few points detailing just why the pressure cooker is a miracle-worker.

  1. Saves you a lot of time

It has been found that using pressure cookers rather than the conventional slow cookers can cut down on your cooking time by a wide margin. They reduce your cooking time by more than half! So, you can come home from work and skip the take-out. Instead, use your trusty pressure cooker to whip up a delicious, healthy, home-made meal in minimum time.

  1. Energy efficient

The pressure cooker saves you money as well as time! It cooks your food way faster than the old slow cookers. It uses trapped heat to cook the food instead of losing the steam. This makes it much more energy efficient. In fact, pressure cookers save almost 70% of the energy used by slow cookers.

  1. Healthier option

There have been rumors floating around about pressure cookers being unhealthy as the intense heat kills all the vitamins and minerals in your food. However the truth is the complete opposite. Research has found that pressure cooking actually saves more nutrients compared to other forms of cooking. Cooking food in an open pot of water is the way most nutrients are lost. Steam based pressure cooking makes up for this as it uses little water and cooks the food rapidly. In fact pressure cooking retains up to 90% of the nutrients!

  1. Perfect for vegetarians

Vegetarianism has become very popular in the recent past. Most vegetarians, however, end up ordering take-out as it can be very time-consuming to cook veggies and beans. After a tiring day at work, it could be tough to spend another two hours cooking. The pressure cooker will change this. It is especially efficient when it comes to vegetables and beans! Unlike the slow cooker, which was inefficient and also compromised on the taste, you can get perfectly cooked vegetables in a matter on 15-minutes.

  1. Very convenient

You don’t have to constantly stand by the pressure cooker and make sure it is being cooked right. It is a great way to multi-task as you can toss the food in, set it and continue with your work. It usually gives you a signal when cooking is done and you can then turn it off. It requires no babysitting at all.

  1. Environment friendly

A good quality pressure cooker will save tons of energy as it uses efficient cooking methods and the latest technology. Also, it is way faster than conventional cooking appliances. It saves 70% of cooking fuel used, which significantly benefits the environment. Pressure cookers help in cutting down on gas and this means you are reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emission when you use one.

  1. Keeps the kitchen cool

It can be a pain cooking in the summer, especially if your kitchen is starting to feel more like a sauna. Using normal, open pots causes the heat to escape and flood your kitchen with hot air. This can be avoided by using pressure cookers which are tightly sealed and retain the heat. Also, you don’t even need to stay in the kitchen as it is cooking.

The pressure cooker is the new favorite appliance of foodies around the world and it is here to stay!
